Tarantino's Manson Film About Manson Family Wins Sony's Distribution

November 17, 2017

Following the fallout of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, whose films have been made with Weinstein since Pulp Fiction, has been in search of a new home for his upcoming ninth feature film. Deadline reports that Sony Pictures has won out an intense bidding war that included every major Hollywood studio except for Disney.

The film is an ensemble with Tarantino reportedly having been in talks with Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, and Jennifer Lawrence for potential roles in the film. It remains to be seen who will be cast in the film in the end, but Tarantino is gearing up for another major ensemble piece.

The film, whose working title is #9 (referencing Tarantino’s ninth feature film as director), will be set in Los Angeles and will likely shoot in the summer of 2018 for a 2019 release. The script is said to be centered, at least one part of it, around Sharon Tate, actress and wife of director Roman Polanski, who was murdered by Charles Manson and his followers in 1969. Deadline notes, however, that previous reports calling the film as being “about” the Charles Manson family murders would be “akin to calling ‘Inglourious Basterds’ a movie about Adolf Hitler, when the Nazi leader was only in a scene or two.”

Sources also have compared the film to Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction while noting it will have a budget “in the range of ‘Django Unchained,'” which had a $100-million budget but grossed over $425 million at the global box office.
