Hasbro has unveiled a fresh toy line for the My Little Pony movie, consisting of two figures and two playsets based on the upcoming animated film. Over the years, the franchise has become one of the company’s most valuable properties, generating over $1 billion in sales and spawning one of the largest fan communities in pop culture. It’s for this reason Hasbro is keen on broadening the brand’s outreach by partnering with Lionsgate for a new movie set for release this week (as of this writing). It marks the first time since 1986 My Little Pony will make its way to theaters, so they’ll surely want to turn its debut into an event for fans to celebrate.
Certain films (like Star Wars, for example) lend themselves nicely to merchandising opportunities, and since My Little Pony was originally conceived as a toy line, it goes without saying there would be some nice tie-in products in conjunction with the movie. Those looking to add to their collections now know just what exactly will be available as they await to see their favorite characters on the big screen.
Hasbro has showcased four of the products hitting stores this fall. These are the Cantrelot and Seaquestria Castle playset, the Pinkie Pie Swimming Seapony figure, the Seashell Lagoon playset, and the My Magical Princess Twilight Sparkle figure. All toys will be sold at most major retailers and Hasbro’s official website. You can check out images of the merchandise in the gallery below:
Of these, the Magical Princess Twilight Sparkle toy will arguably be the one in highest demand, as it’s fully interactive with the ability to say more than 90 phrases, light up her horn, and move her head and hooves. The Cantrelot and Sequestria playset should also sell well, combining two key locations from the movie. Fans will be able to recreate their favorite scenes and come up with new adventures with a multitude of accessories fit for any occasion. The playset comes packaged with figures of Queen Novo, Spike the Pufferfish. Those who love Pinkie Pie have a pair of intriguing options. The 6-inch figure can swim on her own in the water and comes with a comb accessory. The seapony also comes in the Seashell Lagoon playset, which includes 14 accessories for customization. These couldn’t have come out at a better time, either. Not only is the movie on the horizon, the toys could be coveted in regards to holiday shopping.
My Little Pony: The Movie is facing something of an uphill climb at the box office, premiering in the shadow of the much-anticipated Blade Runner 2049. However, chances are the film is able to stand out and do well for itself, especially since it’s targeting a very different demographic than Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel. With The LEGO Ninjago Movie failing to make much of an impact commercially, there’s a void in the marketplace for some wholesome family entertainment, and My Little Pony could fill that nice quite nicely when it opens. Hasbro is certainly hoping it’s a hit, which would ensure the toys generate much revenue as well.
