Hulu Adds A Bunch Of Godzilla Movies, In Preparation for Godzilla 2

October 2, 2017

October is a time to celebrate monsters, and on the silver screen, there's arguably no monster bigger than Godzilla. Quite literally referred to as the King of the Monsters, the enormous Japanese reptile has amassed a filmography to rival some of cinema's most popular human characters. To honor that legacy, and to get fans up to speed ahead of the expansion of the MonsterVerse, Hulu has decided to celebrate Godzilla by adding many of his movies to its library.

With the Halloween season officially upon us, Hulu has made it even easier to get all of the monster action that you could want. The streaming platform has added twelve different Godzilla movies to its catalogue, starting with 1993's Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla II and running all the way through 2005's Godzilla: Final Wars.

In fact, the full list of Godzilla movies officially added to Hulu includes:

Godzilla (1998)
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Godzilla 2000
Godzilla Vs. Destroyah
Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus: The G Annihilation Strategy
Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla II
Godzilla Vs. Spacegodzilla
Godzilla Vs. Mothra
Godzilla, Mothra, And King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.
Godzilla: Final Wars

This means that none of the character's classic outings from the mid 20th century have been included, but these twelve films should be more than enough to get you intimately familiar with the legendary Japanese beast before his next silver screen outing. Yes, even the abhorrent American Godzilla movie from 1998 is in there, so you might want to skip that one.

It's clear that Godzilla has a silver screen legacy that can rival just about any other movie character, and it looks like that's only going to become more prominent in the coming years. Taking a cue from the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the superhero genre, the kaiju genre has recently decided to embrace the idea of interconnectivity with the release of Gareth Edwards' Godzilla. That was followed by the release of Kong: Skull Island earlier this year, and it will culminate in 2020 when Godzilla and King Kong finally throw down in the long-awaited Godzilla vs. Kong.

Of course, the biggest distinction between a kaiju movie like Godzilla and a superhero franchise is the former's lack of real continuity. These films are not designed for consumption in any particular order, so there's plenty of room to mix and match the Godzilla lore in any way that you see fit. As long as you have watched them by the time Godzilla: King of the Monsters debuts in theaters, you will have a much better understanding of this popular creature's cinematic history.

These twelve classic Godzilla movies are now available to stream on Hulu. Make sure to check them out if you consider yourself a fan of kaiju destruction, and start gearing up for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which will hit theaters on March 22, 2019.
