Legendary comedian Don Rickles has died at the age of 90.
Throughout his career, Rickles always delivered consistently hilarious performances on late night talk shows shows like The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Show with David Letterman, and in 2015, Rickles appeared on Letterman’s show for the final time.
This interview took place on May 11th, 2015, just nine days before David Letterman’s retirement. Joining him during the interview was Howard Stern, who was the previous guest on the program. At the beginning of the interview, Rickles receives a standing ovation lasting over 30 seconds.
Rickles comes out swinging right away, saying that Howard Stern has a “trick-or-treat hairdo.” However, Rickles does sincerely compliment Stern, saying that he is young, bright, and terrific. Stern says that Rickles is his hero and that as a kid he would watch talk shows specifically to see Rickles.
In fact, for the majority of the interview, Rickles and Stern only talk to each other, with Letterman just sitting on the sidelines and with both Stern and Rickles joking that they’ll get to him in a minute.
In addition to his Letterman appearances, Don Rickles was also noted for appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. One of the most famous bits involving these two was from 1976, when Rickles accidentally broke Carson’s cigarette box while doing a bit. Carson subsequently crashed a taping of Rickles’ show C.P.O. Sharkey, pretending to be very upset about it.
Don Rickles appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson for the final time in May 1992. He never appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
